From summer will enter the market the next generation of S6, S7 and S6 Avant, which become the most powerful in their respective ranges thanks to a modern 420-horsepower V8, characterized by the roll-off system. Inevitably, the ‘downsizing’ also comes to high performance sedans.
We have seen cases as significant as that BMW has been praised for its atmospheric V10 in favor of a V8 biturbo in the M5, with a successful result, it improves performance and reduces fuel consumption. Audi has opted for a similar formula, although with some special feature. For versions of the A6 and A7 S is chosen to use a 420 hp V8, rather than the previous V105.2 liters. The latter version was offered in air for S6 and RS6 for turbocharged (direct rival M5 previously mentioned).
A magical engine
Both the S6 as in the S6 Avant or S7 uses a V8 is a bit special. Has a system that switches off the cylinders 2, 3, 5 and8 toonce, when the load is medium or low throttle and the car moves from third gear. Converts well in specific situations to a V8 into a V4, with the consumer benefits that entails. To address the increase in vibration and sound when moving from full-or half engine, this system has had to supplement with a combination of active engine mounts, which generate a “contravibraciones” and an active control of sound, which emitted through the car speakers a “antisonido” to simulate the same frequency noise when the car is in V8.
All this means that driving is not appreciated the passage from one mode to another. If you find the transition moment you see, sometimes a very slight momentary change in sound, but the car is sounding and acting like a 420-horsepower V8. It has two turbos, one for each bank, which is connected to the engine by means of double-entry two collectors. This set is now located within the V motor itself, shortening distances collectors and offering a more compact overall size. There’s variable valve timing and direct injection. Package is available efficiency, energy recovery, detachable water pump, Stop/Start and oil pump variable flow.
Comes accompanying the gearbox S tronic 7-speed technology and dual-clutch driven. Traction is all quattro, with self-locking center differential crown located between the engine and clutch. The rear differential locking can also be an option. The electromechanical power steering (with another to sport with variable gear ratio option) and is available sport suspension with air springs. The body height from the ground is lowered in 20 mmin the case of S6 and 10 mm in S7.
At the wheel
The performance of these cars is very nice. They are fast and are nothing uncomfortable. This is not sports to enjoy in a closed mountain pass, but for the size they are unfold with great ease thanks to the AWD, which is characterized by causing less understeer than the previous generation. In the fast German autobahns could enjoy its fast engine response and without hesitation to the 250 km/h of self-limited top speed. Put on sale with a price of 85.300 euros the S6, 87.960 euros the S6 Avant and 93.050 euros the S7.
