When the crisis seems that floods everything, suddenly a new world record fell in the week when an Aston Martin Zagato Sanction II DB4GT Coupe 1991 was sold by Bonhams of 1.23 billion pounds (1.54 million euros). When an amount is paid and has to match two factors. The first, someone with a lot of money (there are always people like that, at any time in history) and two that the vehicle comes to auction is truly unique. This is one of four cars built, 30 years after the first round. Also the car was owned by Tony Smith, manager of singer Phil Collins, and had only 4,748 miles on the odometer.
Where does the term Sanction in the name of the car? To find out we must go back in the history of the brand. Has a different meaning to the term Mark, which has become commonly used in Aston Martin. Mark II, for example, meant that the model was a second improved version of a model. However, the term Sanction II did not necessarily indicate an improvement, but a second batch had been sanctioned by the factory.
In this particular case, the Sanction in this DB4GT Zagato Coupe II improved considerably if the initial release, but too late. The original collaboration between Aston Martin and Zagato in Milan led to a production of only 19 Zagatos DB4GT built between 1961 and 1963, although the factory had booked 23 chassis numbers. An indication of the affection felt for these beautiful cars is that the 19 are still in existence, after fifty years. Continue reading →
